What is Biodiversity?
If you observe the world around you, it is easy to see that some animals and plants are alike in the way that they look and in the things they do, and others are quite different from one another. Biodiversity is the rich variety of life on Earth. Click on the following links to learn more about biodiversity: ***Use the Introducing Biodiversity website to help you answer questions about three different types of ecosystems. *** Welcome to the Dzangha Sangha. Read the opening page about the Dzanga-Sangha and then click on “Play Connect the Dots” at the bottom of the page. ***Read the “Bio-Benefits” section on the left, and then click on the five different benefit categories on the top right of the page. Use the arrow keys on the right side of the page to scroll up and down each section. ***To check your understanding of biodiversity, visit What Do You Know? and take the 10-question quiz on biodiversity. Read each question and click on the white dot next to the correct answer. *** What are ecosystems and biomes? Visit this page to find out! Study Jam Videos: Watch the video then test yourself. *** What are ecosystems?-Look outside your window. Ever wonder how all those things live and grow together in one place? That is an ecosystem, and it is a pretty amazing thing! .***What are biomes?- Ecosystems can get really big, and when they do, they are called biomes. Which biome do you live in? ***Changes in ecosytems- Things change, even in ecosystems. Over hundreds and thousands of years, those changes can really add up! ***What is symbiosis?- Sometimes you just need a little help from a friend. That is what symbiosis is all about. Even plants and animals depend on each other from time to time. ***What is the carbon cycle?- Carbon is found in every living thing. Seriously! Did you ever wonder how it gets there? ***What is the nitrogen cycle?- Every living thing needs nitrogen, but it is not so easy to get. Thanks to some helpful bacteria, though, plants and animals are able to get the nitrogen they need to survive. ***Population growth- Population is not just for people. Plants and animals have populations, too! Limiting factors in an environment make sure the population does not get out of control. ***Food Webs- Did you know that organisms can be part of more than one food chain? It can get pretty complicated. That is where the food web comes in handy. ***Food chains- How does a snail get its food? How about a tree? Find out all about the food chain, and you will know! |
Fossils
Fossils provide a valuable record of the plant and animal life and environmental conditions from millions, even billions of years ago.
